Zakopane on a rainy day

Prices and opening days checked on 24 September 2026 on the websites of the Tatra Museum, the Tatra National Park and Termy Zakopiańskie. Museums change their hours between seasons, so check the day before.

Rainy day ideas at a glance

Thermal baths: the reliable plan A

When it pours, half of Podhale heads for the warm water. Sitting in a warm outdoor pool while the rain falls around you is one of the best things you can do here. Termy Zakopiańskie, the only baths inside the town, are at ul. Jagiellońska 31, about 15 minutes on foot from our house: pools and slides, jacuzzis, saunas, a salt cave and even a bowling alley. Open daily 9:00 to 22:00.

The free giant model of the Tatras

The Tatra National Park's Nature Education Centre (Centrum Edukacji Przyrodniczej) at ul. Chałubińskiego 42a has the largest model of the Tatras in Poland, an exhibition about the park's nature and a small 4D cinema. It is the perfect way to see where everything is before the weather clears, and it is only 450 metres from Willa Storczyk.

• Price: the exhibition is free, but you need to book a time slot online on biletcep.tpn.pl.
• Open: Monday to Saturday. October to April 8:00 to 15:00 (last entry 14:00), May to September 8:00 to 16:00. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.
• For children 7 to 14: the Discovery Room, 15 PLN online or 20 PLN on site. The accompanying adult buys a ticket too.

Museums and Zakopane style

Rain is a good excuse to discover the side of Zakopane most visitors walk past. At the end of the 19th century this village became the summer home of Polish painters, writers and composers, and they invented a whole architectural style here, based on highlander wooden houses.

• Tatra Museum (Muzeum Tatrzańskie), Krupówki 10: the story of the mountains, their nature and the highlanders, in a building in the Zakopane style. Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. 26 PLN for the permanent exhibition (13 PLN reduced), 34 PLN with the temporary one. Permanent exhibitions are free on Thursdays.
• Villa Koliba, ul. Kościeliska 18: the first house built in the Zakopane style, designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz, now the Museum of Zakopane Style. Closed on Tuesdays, open until 19:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. 25 PLN, free on Thursdays.
• Władysław Hasior Gallery, ul. Jagiellońska 7: strange, powerful sculptures and assemblages by one of Poland's most original 20th-century artists. Closed on Wednesdays. 20 PLN.

Between museums, walk along ul. Kościeliska to the Old Church, a small wooden church from the 1840s, and the Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery next to it, where many of the artists, mountain guides and rescuers of Zakopane are buried under carved wooden and stone markers. It is a short walk that works fine under an umbrella.

The Tatra Earth Archive, underground

At the entrance to Kościeliska Valley, 15 minutes by minibus from town, the national park has built the Tatrzańskie Archiwum Planety Ziemia entirely underground. The exhibition tells how the Tatras and the planet were formed, with a life-size dinosaur and cave bear. Visits are guided, in groups leaving every 30 minutes, and take about 90 minutes; ask when you book whether an English-speaking tour is available.

• Tickets: 40 PLN, reduced 30 PLN, online on tpn.gov.pl or on site.
• Open: Tuesday to Sunday, October to May 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 15:00). Closed on Mondays.

Krupówki under an umbrella

Krupówki, the main street, is surprisingly pleasant in the rain: fewer people, free tables and time for the things you usually rush. Warm up in a karczma, a wooden highlander restaurant, with żurek (sour rye soup), kwaśnica (sauerkraut soup with pork ribs) or grilled oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese) with cranberry. Getting around on a wet day is easiest by city bus. There is a stop 30 metres from our gate, and a ride costs 6 PLN.

Walking in the rain: yes, but choose well

Light rain does not have to cancel a walk. The wide, gentle valleys are safe and often more beautiful in bad weather, with mist drifting along the cliffs and hardly anyone around. Good choices:

• Kościeliska Valley: a wide, hardened track to a mountain hut with hot soup at the end. Mroźna Cave halfway up gives you 40 minutes under a roof of rock (open until 31 October).
• Strążyska Valley to the Siklawica waterfall: short, close to town, and the waterfall is at its best after rain.
• Morskie Oko: a paved road all the way, fine in drizzle. You may not see the peaks, but the hut by the lake is warm.

Bring a waterproof jacket or a cape, shoes with grip, and something dry to change into. Paths in the forest get muddy quickly.

What not to do in the rain

Stay off exposed trails, chains and summits. Wet limestone and granite are very slippery, and chains conduct lightning. Giewont, Orla Perć, Rysy and the ridges can wait for a better day. Summer thunderstorms in the Tatras build in the afternoon and arrive fast: if storms are forecast, stay low even if the morning looks bright.

Cable cars are also a poor bet in low cloud. At the top of Kasprowy Wierch or Gubałówka you may see nothing but white. Check the live webcams on the PKL website before you buy a ticket.

A rainy day with children

• Thermal baths with slides and a play pool: Termy Zakopiańskie in town, or Termy Bania and Chochołowskie for more water fun.
• The giant Tatra model and the Discovery Room (ages 7 to 14) at the national park centre.
• The dinosaur underground at the Tatra Earth Archive.
• Bowling at Termy Zakopiańskie.

A rainy day from our house

Morning: walk 450 m to the national park centre for the Tatra model (booked the night before). Late morning: bus to Krupówki and the Tatra Museum, free on Thursdays. Lunch: żurek in a karczma. Afternoon: Villa Koliba and the Old Church on ul. Kościeliska. Evening: two and a half hours in the warm pools at Termy Zakopiańskie, 15 minutes' walk back to bed.
