Morskie Oko from Zakopane

Prices and rules checked on 23 September 2026 with the Tatra National Park (TPN). The park changes its prices and transport rules often, so we update this page when it does.

Morskie Oko ("Eye of the Sea") is the largest lake in the Polish Tatras: 34 hectares of green water at 1,395 m, up to 51 m deep, under a wall of granite that includes Rysy, at 2,499 m the highest peak in Poland. It is also the single most visited place in the Tatras. On a summer Saturday, many thousands of people walk the same road. Plan it well and it is one of the best days of your trip. Plan it badly and you spend it in traffic and queues.

Getting there without a car

For most visitors this is the easiest option. You avoid the parking lottery completely, and the minibus drops you at the park gate.

Private minibuses run from the bus station in Zakopane (the same hub as the railway station, on ul. Chramcówki) to Palenica Białczańska, through Poronin and Bukowina Tatrzańska. The ride takes 30 to 40 minutes, longer on busy summer mornings. Since January 2026 the national park no longer sells tickets for these lines: you pay the driver, usually 15 to 25 PLN each way. Bring cash in złoty.

In the morning the minibuses fill up quickly and leave often. For the way back, they wait at the car park at Palenica. In the late afternoon the queue for the last ones can be long, so do not start down too late.

The park's electric bus

The national park runs four electric buses (e-buses) with a seat for every passenger. They go all the way from Zakopane to Włosienica, 2 km below the lake, so you only walk the last, most beautiful part. Tickets are sold online only on tpn.gov.pl, or at the park's information point at ul. Chałubińskiego 44 in Zakopane.

There are only a few departures a day, the first one around 7:30 in the morning, and the season in 2026 runs from 30 April to 14 October. In Zakopane the e-bus leaves from the park's Nature Education Centre at ul. Chałubińskiego 42, which is about 450 metres from Willa Storczyk.

Getting there by car

The only car park at the start of the road is at Palenica Białczańska, run by the national park. Spaces are sold online for a specific day on tpn.gov.pl/parkingi-morskie-oko. You need your car's registration number. The booking page is in Polish, but your browser's translate function handles it well.

Prices change with the date and with how early you buy. For a normal car in the 2026/2027 season:

"Ahead" means at least three days before. On days of high demand the park can add up to 10 PLN more. A few rules that catch people out:

• The ticket is valid for one calendar day. Staying overnight in the mountain hut means buying parking for every day.
• Refunds and changes only by e-mail to [email protected], until 12:00 the day before. Rain is not a reason for a refund.
• No online tickets left means no spaces on site. In summer the car park is full before 8:00, sometimes by 7:00.
• If Palenica is full, the fallback is the car park at Łysa Polana, about 1.5 km further, or leaving the car in Zakopane and taking the minibus.

The park ticket

Entry to the Tatra National Park costs 11 PLN per adult for one day (5.50 PLN reduced for pupils and students with a valid ID, free for children under 7). One ticket covers every trail in the park for that day, so you can walk to Morskie Oko in the morning and another valley in the afternoon. A 7-day ticket costs 55 PLN.

You can pay at the ticket booth at Palenica by cash or card, or buy online on tpn.gov.pl and get a PDF by e-mail. If you buy online, save the ticket on your phone: there is often no signal on the road, and park rangers check tickets along the way. If you ride the e-bus up, the park ticket is already included.

The walk

The road from Palenica to the lake is asphalt all the way, with a gentle, steady climb of about 400 m. There is no scrambling and no exposure. Families push buggies up it, and people of every age walk it in trainers. It is long, though: 18 km there and back is a real day's walk if you are not used to it.

About 2.9 km in you pass Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, a set of waterfalls right next to the road. At 7 km is Włosienica, a clearing where the e-buses turn round. From there it is the last 2 km to the lake, with the first views of the peaks opening up ahead.

Horse carts: what changed in 2026

For decades horse-drawn carts (in Polish fasiągi) carried visitors up most of the road, and for just as long there has been a public argument about whether the horses are overworked on the climb. Since 1 September 2026, as a pilot scheme by the national park, the carts run only on a short section: Palenica Białczańska to Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, about 2.9 km. From there you walk the remaining 6 km.

• Fares are set by the drivers, not the park. In September 2026 they were about 50 PLN up and 30 PLN down, paid in cash.
• A cart takes up to 10 adults.
• Carts are stopped in hot weather, so on a summer heatwave day do not count on one.

Many visitors now walk the whole way or take the e-bus instead. With the shortened route, the cart saves you less than an hour of walking.

At the lake

On the shore stands the Morskie Oko mountain hut (schronisko), built in 1908 and the oldest hut still standing in the Polish Tatras. It serves hot meals, soup and cake, but expect queues at lunchtime in summer and bring cash in case the card reader is down. A path runs all the way round the lake: about 2.5 km, 40 minutes, and the far side is much quieter than the terrace by the hut.

If you still have energy, take the steep stone path to Czarny Staw pod Rysami, a second lake 190 m higher. It takes about 40 minutes up and gives the view down onto Morskie Oko that you see on postcards. Rysy itself is a different matter: a serious climb with chains near the top, not an add-on for the afternoon.

When to go

• Early morning, any season. Start walking by 7:30 and you reach a quiet lake with still water. By 11:00 in summer the road is a stream of people.
• September and October are our favourite: autumn colours, cooler air and fewer crowds, especially on weekdays.
• Summer is beautiful but crowded, and the car park fills first thing.
• Winter turns the lake white and frozen. The road stays open, but it is often icy, so take microspikes. Parts of the upper road cross avalanche paths: check the park's tourist bulletin for the avalanche level before you go.
• Spring (April and May) can be slushy and muddy on the upper part, with snow lingering by the lake.

A day at Morskie Oko from our house

A simple plan: walk 450 m to the e-bus stop on ul. Chałubińskiego (until mid-October), or get to the bus station in Zakopane and take a minibus from there. Start walking from Palenica by 8:00, have a late breakfast by the lake, walk round it or up to Czarny Staw, and come down in the early afternoon. You are back in Zakopane by 15:00 with the evening free for Krupówki.
